He Married a Woman Once Tried for Murder

 

Gouverneur Morris was an important American leader. He helped write the United States Constitution and was known for his many love affairs. For most of his life, he did not want to marry.

But in 1809, at the age of 57, Morris married his housekeeper, Anne Cary “Nancy” Randolph. She was only 35 years old. His friends were very surprised by the marriage.

Nancy had a troubled past. In 1792, she was put on trial for murder. She was accused of killing a newborn baby. The baby was believed to be the result of a relationship with her brother-in-law.

Nancy said the baby was born dead. The court could not find enough proof that she had killed the baby, so she was found not guilty.

Despite her past, Morris and Nancy had a happy marriage. In 1813, Nancy gave birth to their only child, Gouverneur Morris Jr.
