The Camino de Santiago, also known as The Way of St. James, is a
very famous long walk in Europe. This special journey started a long time ago
in the 9th century. In the past, Christian travelers walked this path across
the continent to reach the northwest area of Spain. They wanted to find the
tomb of St. James and show their strong love for God.
Today, people walk the Camino for many different reasons. There is no
single route to complete the journey, so travelers have many choices. Some
popular paths start in France, Italy, or Portugal and cross into Spain. Other
people prefer the shortest path, which begins and ends inside Spain. This short
route is easier because travelers do not need to worry about passport or visa
problems between countries.
Most modern walkers do not travel for religious reasons. In fact, a
recent study shows that about 80% of the people on the trail are not religious.
Instead, they go on this long trip for personal reflection, physical exercise,
or simple outdoor adventure. Many people want time away from busy city life to
think about their personal goals and future.
During the journey, walkers usually stay in very old hostels along the
trail. These hostels give travelers a warm place to rest and eat after walking
for many hours. People get the chance to meet new friends from all over the
world and share stories together.
